How to Prepare Your South Florida Home for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season in South Florida runs from June 1 through November 30. Whether you have impact windows already or are still using shutters, preparation matters. Here's the checklist our team recommends every year.

Start Early — Before June

The worst time to think about hurricane prep is when a storm is already in the Gulf. Start your checklist in April or May. Test your shutters or inspect your impact windows for any chips, cracks, or seal failures. If you have impact windows, a quick visual inspection is usually all you need — they require no setup before a storm.

Document Your Home

Walk through your home with your phone and record a video of every room, every appliance, and every valuable item. Store this video in the cloud. If you ever need to file an insurance claim, this documentation is invaluable. Update it every year.

Review Your Insurance Policy

Pull out your homeowner's insurance policy and review your hurricane deductible. In Florida, hurricane deductibles are typically a percentage of your home's insured value — not a flat dollar amount. Know your number before a storm hits. If you have impact-rated openings, call your insurer and make sure you're receiving every discount you're entitled to.

Secure Your Yard

Outdoor furniture, potted plants, grills, and decorations become projectiles in a hurricane. Have a plan for where everything goes before a storm. If you have impact windows, your glass is protected — but your neighbors' windows may not be, and loose debris can still cause damage to your roof, car, and landscaping.

The Advantage of Impact Windows During Prep Season

If you have impact windows and doors installed by All Phase, your storm prep is dramatically simpler. There's nothing to board up, nothing to deploy, and nothing to store. Your home is protected the moment the storm is named. That peace of mind is something our customers tell us they value more than almost anything else.
