Can Impact Windows Lower Your Homeowner's Insurance in Florida?

Florida homeowners pay some of the highest insurance premiums in the country. Impact windows are one of the most effective ways to reduce those premiums — but the process requires a few steps to make sure you actually receive the discount.

Why Insurers Discount Impact Windows

Insurance companies price risk. A home with impact-rated windows and doors is statistically less likely to suffer catastrophic damage during a hurricane — which means fewer and smaller claims. Insurers pass a portion of that reduced risk back to you in the form of lower premiums. In Florida, this discount can be significant, sometimes 20–45% on the wind portion of your premium.

What You Need to Qualify

To receive the full discount, all openings in your home — windows, doors, garage doors, and skylights — typically need to be impact-rated or protected. Partial protection may qualify for a partial discount. You'll need to provide your insurer with documentation: the product NOA numbers, your permit, and your final inspection certificate. All Phase provides all of this documentation as part of every installation.

How to Claim Your Discount

After installation is complete and your final inspection is passed, contact your insurance company and let them know you've installed impact-rated openings throughout your home. Provide the documentation. Ask them to re-rate your policy. Some insurers require a wind mitigation inspection by a licensed inspector — this is a separate inspection from your building permit inspection and typically costs $150–$200, but the annual savings usually pay for it many times over.

The Long-Term Math

If your annual insurance premium is $8,000 and you receive a 25% wind discount, that's $2,000 per year in savings. Over 10 years, that's $20,000 — a substantial offset against the cost of installation. Combined with energy savings, the financial case for impact windows in South Florida is very strong.
